Built from one million bricks and standing 234 feet tall, Baltimore's shot tower (officially the "Phoenix Shot tower") was at one time the tallest structure in the United States. It's cornerstone was laid by Charles Carrol, Maryland's signatory on the Declaration of Independence. Threatened with demolition in the 1920's (it might have become a gas station), public outcry led to it's preservation as a national landmark.
In 1880, local resident Jim Horney needed some cash. As the story goes, Horney bet a friend that he could jump off the top of the Tower, and live to collect a whopping five dollar wager. The friend, obviously not a very good one, slapped cash on the table. Carrying the sun umbrella from his horse cart, Horney lept heroically... and fell like a sack of rocks. He landed, shaken, but amazingly alive, on the roof of an Exeter Street house, nearly a block away.
