Victor Cohen opened the original "Victor's" market iin 1944, with the philosophy of providing shoppers the very finest products available at a fair price, with excellent service and attention to detail. How much detail? Legend has it that Victor custom-built the original aisle units so that his most “vertically challenged” shopper could still reach the top shelf. In 1953 Victor opened another store and called it "Eddies."
Back in the 1950’s, Eddie’s became known for our extra touches by not just selling hams and turkeys, but roasting them for our busy customers. Home-made soups filled the store with wonderful aromas. Back then, a grocery store selling prepared foods was a revolutionary idea, and you could say that it was the foundation of our popular “Gourmet to Go” meals.
Victor introduced his daughter Nancy to the business in 1981, offering her an important assignment. "Stand at the door and say hello to people." Nancy protested that her Masters degree wasn’t being well utilized , but Victor was unmoved. "You want to know what to do, that's what you do. Stand at the door and say hello." To this day, Nancy Cohen spends some time each day in our stores, greeting customers by name.
In 1990, we purchased our second location - the former Acme supermarket on Charles Street – giving us room to grow and offer an even greater variety of products to our growing customer base. Today, we continue Victor’s original mission of providing unequaled customer service and extraordinary products.
The biggest mystery - who is this “Eddie” anyway? Shortly after Victor first opened, he joined an independent grocers cooperative that combined their collective buying power in order to compete with the major chains that were entering the market. The effort was led by Eddie Levy, and the participating stores bore his name. Eddie’s name stuck, and as we grew we distinguished ourselves as “Eddie’s of Roland Park.” The rest is history.
You'll see our heritage in everything Eddie's has to offer: catering, personal shopping, custom cut meats, produce, prepared gourmet goods, deli, bakery, and gift baskets. That's why shopping at Eddie's of Roland Park is truly an experience. Visit us at either of our two locations, and you'll see for yourself.
