9/25   #613                                            SEARCHING FOR NEW PRODUCTS

Adam Borden has one of the more interesting jobs we’ve come across.  He runs a venture capital firm that seeks out small promising food companies that seem poised for a breakout into the next level.  What makes them promising?  If they seem to be part of a strong national culinary trend and they have a commitment to quality, Borden is interested.  Recently he has noticed a number of small artisanal producers build up business by doing things the old fashioned way.  There is also a corresponding trend in consumer tastes for products that have home-made quality about them, a quality that respects tradition.  Borden sees a rejection in some quarters of highly processed or over-processed foods, and a yearning  for something more hand made.
Three products that Borden brought to our attention are:  Koeze Cream-Nut Peanut Butter,
Barefoot Countessa Blood Orange Marmalade, and Fiscalini 18-month Bandage-Wrapped Cheddar Cheese.  We tasted these fine products and were blown away by both their sensational quality and their hand-crafted character.
