A TOAST FOR THE NEW YEAR...TARTINES
As the new year settles upon us, we reflect on the past and plan for the future. When you raised your glass to toast the New Year, the food-minded gourmand might have thought just that: toast.
A toast takes many forms. We know 2017 was the year of the ever-popular avocado toast: Crusty bread, toasted evenly, topped with mashed avocado, a squeeze of lemon and a dusting of sea salt.
Let's go a step further and top the toast with smoked salmon, chevre, cucumber and caviar. That's what we call a tartine: open-faced sandwiches on toasted rustic bread. Tartines are perfect for anytime of the day, or simply cut them in thirds for an elegant hors d'oeuvre.
To prepare your own tartines, begin with a crusty loaf of bread, such as our pumpernickel or sourdough boule. Slice, then toast in a 350° oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown. Top with some of these delicious combinations: proscuitto/mozzarella/basil/pesto; red pepper hummus/feta/cilantro; melted Brie/fig jam/fresh mint; Smithfield ham/Gruyere/peach chutney, or roast beef/Boursin/arugula.
Tartines are a great way to turn your holiday leftovers into a celebration. Let's make a "toast" to the New Year topped with good health, peace and all things delicious, from your friends at Eddie's.
